Course Overview
This workshop is aimed primarily at the practicing RPA who either:
- feels the need to refresh existing knowledge and thus maintain confidence in ability, or
- has a need to demonstrate knowledge/ experience via training, possibly for the purposes of re-certification.
Reflecting the requirements of the HSE Basic Syllabus, the focus of the workshop is on refreshing basic underpinning knowledge for RPAs. The emphasis is on re-establishing key areas of knowledge and ensuring understanding.
The workshop will take the form of an extended (desk-top) exercise where you, the RPA, will be expected to analyse and assess the standard of radiation protection within a multi-faceted facility and advise the employer accordingly. In order to develop this advice you will be required to:
- audit the facility
- analyse and interpret given data and information
- undertake fact-finding and quantitative analysis.
All necessary references and data sources, as well access to any specialist information or expertise within the various HPA Radiation Protection Division departments, will be made available. A number of summary presentations will be interspersed throughout the two days but it is intended that the majority of learning will be achieved via the exercise. The provisional program is given below.
Although aimed primarily at RPAs this workshop may also be of interest to other professionals in the radiation protection field. Applications are welcome from all sectors.
It will be assumed that all attending have previously undertaken education and training covering the topics listed in the HSE Basic syllabus.
Provisional Programme
The table-top exercise will proceed throughout the duration of the course, and will conclude with a wash-up/discussion on the final day. Exercise sessions will be interspersed with a number of summary presentations covering the following provisional topics:
Refresher topic 1: Regulatory Framework
Refresher topic 2: Dealing with external radiation hazards
Refresher topic 3: Dealing with internal radiation hazards
Refresher topic 4: Instrumentation
Refresher topic 5: New and pending issues
