Who is the course aimed at?

This is a radiation safety course for those who work with, or whose work is affected by sealed radioactive sources. The course would be of interest to equipment users, managers and those who are concerned about working in the vicinity of a sealed source. Applications covered include gauging systems, irradiator sources and small teaching/calibration sources. The course is not appropriate for industrial gamma radiographers.

While students would find it useful to know something about the sealed sources they work with, no previous knowledge of radiation safety is needed.

What is the course about?

This course provides an awareness of the basic principles of radiation protection in relation to sealed radioactive material.  The course focuses on the practical steps that can be taken to minimise exposure, such as carrying out checks and measurements, the effective use of radiation monitors, and the importance of following procedures. Steps to take in the event of an incident are also discussed.

What are the benefits of this course?

Those attending this course will:

  • Learn about the nature of the radiations emitted by typical sealed radioactive sources.
  • Understand the hazards of ionising radiation and the importance of keeping radiation doses "as low as reasonably practicable" (ALARP).
  • Understand how ALARP is achieved in practice.
  • Appreciate the main legal requirements for keeping and working with sealed sources.
  • Become competent in the use of a radiation monitor and understand how to interpret measurement results.
  • Understand the importance of following safety procedures.
