Who is this course aimed at?
This course is for those appointed to the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor, who are responsible for gauges or analytical equipment. Those attending should have a working knowledge of the equipment to be supervised, although no prior knowledge of radiation safety is assumed.
What is the course about?
This course teaches the basic principles of radiation protection in relation to level, density, thickness and moisture gauges, and analytical equipment such as calibration sources, XRF, XRD and GCD.
What are the benefits of this course?
Those attending this course will:
- Learn about the various types of ionising radiations; their nature and properties
- Learn more about the requirements of legislation governing:
- Occupational exposure to radiation
- Holding of radioactive material
- The accumulation and disposal of radioactive waste
- The security and other requirements for High Activity Sealed Sources
- The transport of radioactive material
- Recognise the hazards of working with ionising radiation why it is important to keep exposures "as low as reasonably practicable" (ALARP)
- Understand and how some basic principles can be put into practice to achieve ALARP
- Learn good working practices such as the use of radiation monitors, dealing with emergencies etc
Course overview
The programme runs over three full days and comprises of interactive talks, group exercises and practical work. The course covers all the necessary legal and practical requirements, and the material is put into context through real-life examples and case histories. Speakers are selected from our pool of experienced specialists and advisers who will be on hand throughout the course to talk about specific issues.
There is an optional, written assessment at the end of each course.
