Who is this course aimed at?

This is a Radiation Protection Supervisors course, for those within a dental practice responsible for radiation protection. Dental surgeons, practice managers and senior nurses might find this course useful.

Attendance on this course fulfils the requirement for periodic update training, given in IRMER and those attending may claim 6 points of verifiable CPD.

 

What is the course about?

This course teaches the requirements for radiation protection with respect to both worker and patient exposures; covering both the safe use of the equipment and how to achieve legal compliance. The roles of specific 'duty holders' will be emphasised.

 

What are the benefits of attending this course?

Those attending this course will:

  • Learn about the nature and properties of x-radiation;
  • Become familiar with the terminology used in radiation protection;
  • Become familiar with the relevant requirements of both the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999, the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000, and associated guidance
  • Be aware of the potential hazards associated with x-radiation and why it is important to keep doses to staff and patients "as low as reasonably practicable" (ALARP)
  • Understand the basic principles of radiation protection and how these can be used within a dental practice to restrict exposure; and
  • Understand the role of the Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS).

Course overview

The course programme runs over one day and comprises of interactive talks and group exercises. All the necessary legal and practical requirements are covered and there is plenty of opportunity for discussion with the speakers and other attendees. Speakers are selected from our pool of specialists and advisers, all of whom have experience in dental radiation safety.
