This is a course for those who audit contract industrial gamma or x-radiography. Attendees might typically be members of a safety team or project managers representing the client. Note that this course is not appropriate for those undertaking radiographic inspections.
What is the course about?
This course teaches the principal hazards associated with contract industrial radiography and how these are controlled in practice. The basic legal requirements are covered, but the emphasis is on steps that ensure the hazard is appropriately managed with respect to workers and others in the vicinity.
What do I get out of this course?
By attending this course, you will:
Understand the nature and properties of x- and gamma radiations
Understand the terminology used in radiation protection
Realise why it is important to keep radiation doses "as low as reasonably practicable" (ALARP)
Learn more about the practical and legal requirements for:
Demarcating the boundary of, and excluding persons from, the "radiation controlled area"
Making radiation dose rate measurements and the significance of measurement results
The safe transport and temporary storage of radioactive sources
Recognise how radiation emergencies can be prevented, and the actions that may need to be taken by radiographers in the event of accidents such as lost or unshielded radioactive sources
