Introduction

As the UK's primary authority on radiation protection, the HPA's Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards (CRCE) represents a significant resource for employers and others.

A specific function of CRCE is to carry out research to advance knowledge about protection from the risks of radiation; provide laboratory and technical services; run training courses; provide expert information; and fulfil a significant advisory role to regulators, government, the public and others.

In 2003 the Health and Safety Executive recognised HPA as the UK's first 'Radiation Protection Adviser Body' and this was reaffirmed in 2008. The Agency's expertise is also acknowledged worldwide with contributions to international bodies such as ICRP and IAEA.

 

Radiation Safety Training

From our three venues, we train about 2000 individuals a year in many aspects of radiation safety. We run courses to raise awareness of radiation hazards or legal obligations, as well as courses providing a detailed understanding of practical radiation protection. Audiences range from shop floor workers and their supervisors to senior management, from specialist scientists to those who have no previous experience of science. Attendees come to us from a range of industries, both in the UK and abroad.

Using the expertise available within HPA, we can also deliver training that focuses on specific aspects of radiation safety. Radon assessment, non-ionising radiation, personal monitoring, radiation metrology or emergency response are examples.
